Once upon a time, 12,500 years ago to be roughly exact - the glaciers of Caithness began to retreat. Leaving clay and moraine as the perfect environment to hold standing water. First to come was the grasses and mosses, within the pools, moss greweventually filling up the space. This is when the archive of peat started.
Sphagnum moss is fluffy, long and thin like a caterpillar meets a kitten (kitty-piller if you will). These beautiful freak kitty-pillers smile and breathe their way upwards, leaving their little behinds to die as they grow and become one with the peat.
